@cobalt I wrote this because someone was breathlessly talking about a highly political non-technical executive who was "great at securing funding".
Utterly perplexed me. There's a level of politics that involves psychodynamics and subtle reads on personality, but the only move available to non-technicians (because they cannot evaluate what is possible) is... just to promise people things and hope someone else delivers.
Promising people things is not a valuable skill!
@ludicity I was in high level sales years ago and later in general management a few times where I saw salesmen and consultants get contracts thru smiling and promising people things. Your description of these folks also rang true for those so-called tech wizards who did not actually do tech. These skills are part of a con man’s show.
